You really don't need to protect your teak furniture. Teakwood is really exclusive in the fact that if you leave it in its native state, it really doesn't require any preservation. Teakwood is something that can be left outdoors all year prolonged without having to worry about it, even if the conditions of the climate are extreme. It is because of this that people genuinely love outdoor teak furnishings. It is true that after being exposed to the sun for a prolonged period of time that teakwood will start to turn a silvery gray color, but this is a inborn process and doesn't harm the structural integrity of the wood at all. For people who want to preserve the organic color of the wood that it has when they buy their furnishings, it is a common practice to use a teak sealant. It is often used to help to give the teak wood a darker color as well. Not only will a teak sealer help to darken up your wood, but will it will also provide it with a UV protection as well as an anti-fungicide that will prevent mold and mildew from growing on it. Whether you're teak furnishings is aged or whether it is new doesn't genuinely matter, you can place a teak sealants on any piece after it has been cleaned. These sealers aren't the same thing as glaze. The sealant simply acts to preserve the wood, while at the same time still allowing it to release its oils naturally. This application is not going to peel or bubble up on you like glaze will. This is going to help to stain your wood and protect it at the same time. When you're looking at colors, realize that the darker the stain you get, the better UV protection the furniture will have, which means you won't have to put it on as often. If by chance you have inherited a piece of teak furnishings from someone that has glaze on it, you will need to remove all of the old varnish by sanding, and then you have the choice of either staining it the color you like or leaving it biological. Applying a preservative to your teak wood furniture is pretty straightforward. Make sure that you apply the preservative to the furnishings during the summer time months when it has been sitting in the sun for a lengthy time and all of the grains are opened up. You should apply the first coat by spraying it liberally and then rubbing it in with a rag. Your teak furniture is going to require two applications, and make sure that you get it on all surfaces. This includes top, bottom, sides, and in between any slats that might be present. If you are applying the stain on any surface that you care about, then you need to make sure that you put something under your wood as you don't want to cause stain damage to anything you care about. You will need to apply the stain yearly after it has been washed with a mild detergent and water, but only to the surfaces that gets on After doing this to your furnishings you really have to do very little else to protect it. Going once in a while it wouldn't hurt to provide your furnishings with a good washing to remove any type of soiling from food and dirty hands and such. If you spill anything on the sealant, like coffee, wine, or foods that stain, you need to make sure that you get it off immediately as these things can penetrate through the sealer and leave stains on your furniture. If you want to improve your furnishings and resistance to these types of stains you can put on a teak clear coat. Teakwood is naturally pretty impervious to water because of the oil that is contained naturally inside of it. Because of these natural oils that leach out of the wood, you don't want to put any glaze or water sealers on it. Polyurethane and glaze products will never fail to peel up and chip off of teak wood products. The only way to remove these mistakes is by standing, which can be a real nightmare and is best avoided. If you're thinking of putting oil on your teak furnishings to help stain it, think again as this will only provide an avenue for mold to start growing on your furniture, rather than the wanted effect of a darker color. This again causes more work for you as you will need to wash the furnishings with bleach and soap and then sand the surface. If you enjoy spending time outdoors relaxing, then buying a piece of teak wood furniture is an excellent investment. It brings quality and class to your yard and outdoor setting. Knowing how to take care of teak furniture is vital to defend your investment.
