How to Build a Fiberglass Box

By: Alex De Mostafa

Fiberglass is made up of very fine fibers of a glass. It is a very special material used for creating exteriors because it is very strong and can last on different kinds of weather.

One way of using the fiberglass is to build a box. Usually when one has a project, the correct shape or box needed for it is out of stock so knowing how to build a box is a big help. The use of fiberglass is a better idea. Learning how to build a fiberglass box requires a short time.

Prepare the following items needed to build a fiberglass box.

Materials:

Fiberglass strips and mats
Bondo
Foam
Resin
Paint
Resin colorant
Sandpaper
Polyethylene where two-parts of it are grade form of construction

Tools:

Orbit sander
Dented kitchen knife
Lots of brushes
Mixing dish and sticks
Measuring tape
Small chisel
Paper and pencil

Here are the simple instructions on how to build a fiberglass box.

Step 1: Create the box’s layout.

The box could be used to fit inside another space like a dashboard. It is necessary to get the dimensions of this space where the box will be inserted. Using the pencil and paper, draw out the plan with the accurate measurements. It is much better to draw the plan in 3D.

Step 2: Make the mold of the box

Shape out the box’s form that will be constructed using the foam. Since it is a box, the edges should always be in perfect degrees and very straight. It is important to make sure that the mold has straight edges because a fiberglass hardly turns into a box with a perfect right-angled corner. Once the mold of the box is formed, put on three coats of the available paint. The paint is necessary because the foam does not blend nicely with Bondo. The paint serves as the barrier. Afterwards, finalize the shape with the Bondo by brushing thin layers.

Step 3: Finish up the Bondo.

Let the Bondo dry up slightly after it is molded into a necessary shape. Get a file and use it to get the mold close enough to the projected box size. The surface should be smooth. Then, allow the box’s mold to hard dry. Use any kind of paint to brush the Bondo and let this layer dry. This could help in seeing any unwanted formation in the box. Use the sandpaper to smooth the Bondo.

Step 4: Add up the fiberglass

Put on the resin-coated fiberglass and lay it above the mold. Use thinner strips for smaller pieces and corners and the sheets are for bigger projects. Avoid forming pits, defects and wrinkles. If a flaw is left out in the box, it will affect the whole appearance of the box and make it look ugly. Sanding it will also be harder.

Step 5: Sand the surfaces

Use the 400-grit paper on the orbit sander. Never use other kinds of sander since it would leave unwanted scratches in the box’s surface. Make sure that the fiberglass waste is cleared off while sanding.

Step 6: Take off the mold.

If the mold does not want to be removed, lightly break off the mold until it can be removed.

Step 7: Paint the box.

Use the paint gun for best results. For a piano finishing, use the resin and for an opaque finish, mix a coloring agent to the paint.

Now, the box wanted or needed is done. For artistic minds, there are imaginative ways to make it beautiful and charming. It is very easy to know how to build a fiberglass box.
