What would you do if you were owed a bunch of money and didn't even know about it? Well, you'd be surprised how many people do. As an example in the State of Oklahoma's Treasurer's Office there is a database of unclaimed property with over 350,000 names of people owed money on it. Could your name be one of them? Cash, jewelry, stocks, bonds, unclaimed insurance benefits, all of these and more adding up to over over $260 million are just waiting to be claimed by the rightful owners or heirsin the Treasury. The state is actively looking to return the money to the owners. It is involved in any number of outreach activities attempting to find the owners. One of the activities they are currently undertakingis to find the account holders at the state fair. The state Treasurer for the state of Oklahoma, Scott Meacham, is taking the show on the road. He and his staff are going to the Oklahoma State Fair with the purpose to give back over $300 million in unclaimed property. Yee haw! It is Meachum's job to manage Oklahoma's state unclaimed property program. This isn't the first year the state has attended the fair with the goal of giving back this money! This year is the ninth year in a row that Meachum's office has gone to the fair. This isn't just a "good idea" either in the past years the efforts made in going to the state fair have resulted in over $3.2 million being returned to more than 8,200 fair goers. Last year alone, almost half a million dollars was found for attendees of the fair in Oklahoma City and close to the same amount was found for attendees in Tulsa. The success of the program under Meachum's direction has been fantastic. Since taking over the helm, Meacham's office has returned nearly $62 million to Oklahoma residents.
